Anyone training seriously has already bought the basics. What's missing is usually one of two things: something that improves the workout they already do, or something that helps them recover from it.

The first question to ask is where they train. Home trainers want bands, small weights and a mat; gym-goers want personal accessories — gloves, a belt, an insulated bottle, earbuds. A gym accessory given to someone who trains in the living room stays in the cupboard.

The category most often forgotten is recovery: massage guns, rollers and compression gear. Nearly every trainer wants these, almost nobody buys them for themselves, and they get used daily.
